Waiting.

I can't stand waiting. Can't stand it. Waiting in a checkout line? Forget it. Waiting at the dr.'s office? The kids do better. Waiting on 2 trains with every railroad crossing blocked in VC? Give me a Xanax. I'll admit it: I HATE WAITING. Me? Impatient? lol...just a little. ;)

Speaking of patience, Sam & I have been in "go mode" recently, taking the necessary steps to build up our credit, get our debt paid off, save for a downpayment on a home, and obtain pre-approval for a loan so we can begin looking for a place to call our own.

I'm learning rather quickly that sometimes I'm not as patient as I like to believe I am. God keeps having to say, "Whoa, Sarah...hang on a second. It's not time for that, yet."

I was standing in the foyer at church on Sunday, and I heard someone say to Maya, "Waiting is a hard thing to do for little kids, huh?" In her sweet, innocent, soft voice, she agreed - of course. But it's not just for little kids...waiting is a hard thing to do for big kids, too. And, waiting is hard thing to do for Sarah! :)

I read something once that really stuck with me - I'm sure it's a Maxism - Patience deeply received results in patience freely offered.

Think about that. Pretty powerful.

There are several reasons why patience is a good thing to offer:

  • Because God says so. (It's one of the fruits of the Spirit!)

  • Because patient people have great understanding. (Proverbs 14:29) Hmmm...I wonder if my impatience stems from a lack of understanding? Very possible.

  • Because we are to be imitators of God - and God is love - and love is...patient! Before anything else, love is patient.

Anyway, I'll work on it. ;)

On a separate note, things are beginning to take shape. We are on a better schedule. Maya & Gus have had bath time, story time, prayer time, and bed time by 9:00 the last two nights in a row...IN THEIR OWN BED. I've only had to wipe away a few tears, so I've got a good feeling about this. This is a much easier thing on me than making them "cry it out" when they were babies. I couldn't do that - nor did I want to. I wanted to snuggle and kiss 'em and hug 'em and love 'em for as long as they'd let me...because those days don't last forever. I suppose working in an infant mortuary has that effect on a mama.

Sam & I have been enjoying the help from each other - feeding, cleaning, bathing, & dressing are much easier when both parents are involved! (At least for right now - give us a few more weeks and we might be ready to strangle each other, instead lol)

The best part: 8+ hours of sleep!!! It's WONDERFUL!!! One thing is for sure: when mama's happier, everyone is happier. :)

30 Before 30

Okay, so I have been wanting to create this list since I turned 29 in May. I've been dragging my feet. Part of Sarah didn't (and still doesn't) want to acknowledge the fact that I'm that close to 30. I didn't expect my age to bother me, but it's actually about to kill me lol. The other part of Sarah knows that if I put something in writing, I'll HAVE to do it, or FAIL.

So, I've finally decided it's time to get with it. In 253 days, my twenties will officially be a thing of the past. By procrastinating, I'm only giving myself less time to succeed and a better chance to FAIL - and, I can't let that happen. *sigh* Here we go.

  1. Lose 30 lbs. (Yes, I'm fully aware that's only a small fraction of what I NEED to lose...baby steps, people, baby steps.)

  2. Play tennis twice a week.

  3. Get together with friends once a week.

  4. Drink at least 32 oz. of water daily. (Again, baby steps lol)

  5. Read at least 1 book a day to Maya & Gus.

  6. Send a card to Claudia & Camile once a month.

  7. Plan a "fun night" with church family once a month.

  8. Organize my bedroom - weed out clothes I haven't worn in the last 6 months.

  9. Pay off all medical bills.

  10. Go on a date with Sam every 6 weeks.

  11. Read my Bible for 20 minutes every day.

  12. Establish an 8:30 bedtime - with a story and a prayer - for Maya & Gus.

  13. Leave no dirty dishes in the sink at the end of the day.

  14. Do laundry on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

  15. Visit the cemetery in September, December, & March.

  16. Save $1,000 for a downpayment towards a house.

  17. Keep the Pacifica clean and clutter-free.

  18. Get bunk beds for kids' room.

  19. Raise money for the 2012 Autism Care Walk

  20. Drink Pepsi only on Friday & Saturday.

  21. Get a new bike and ride it twice a week.

  22. Grow my nails out.

  23. Put up curtains in my bedroom.

  24. Teach Maya & Gus to sit still and behave in "big church."

  25. Purchase new furniture (love seat & couch).

  26. Pay for someone's meal behind me in a drive-thru.

  27. Find a plant I can't kill.

  28. Take a painting class.

  29. Take a fun road trip.

  30. Give away all of my monkeys to children with pediatric cancer.

Battles At Grace

I know there is a biblical reference describing Satan as a prowling, roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

My dearest prayer warriors, I am begging you to fall on your face before God and intercede for those you know who Satan is doing his best to devour. If God lays it on your heart, please lift up the people of Wichita Grace. We have several "battles" going on right now, and they are completely heart-breaking and devastating.

Specifically, I would like you to remember a little boy, 3-years-old...the same age as Gus. He lays in a hospital bed today as a result of critical head injuries. I would like you to remember the mother who is sitting behind bars after being charged with felony child abuse, awaiting a preliminary hearing on September 6.

Just a few weeks ago, she was sitting in the church pew behind me. Anger. Frustration. Yep, they were both there, too. Who was it that said anger begins as a drop of water? (Oh, that's right - it was Max, my favorite author.) "An irritant. A frustration. Nothing big, just an aggravation. Someone gets your parking place. Someone cuts you off on the highway. A waitress is slow, and you're in a hurry. The toast burns. Drops of water. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.

Before long, you've got a bucket full of rage. Walking revenge. Blind bitterness. Unharnessed hatred. We trust no one and bare our teeth at anyone who gets near. We become walking time bombs that, given just the right tension and fear, could explode like Mr. Goetz."

And, I'm afraid that's exactly what happened. Sadly and sickly, it happened at the expense of a precious, innocent little boy who deserves nothing less than to be loved and loved and loved and loved.

Heart-breaking.

Devastating.

As I mentioned earlier, this is only one of many. Luckily, we have a Secret Weapon, and with Him comes the assurance of victory. Please do not stop praying. If nobody else needs you right now, a 3-year-old little boy certainly does.

Friday Forgiveness

I've really gotten into watching Tyler Perry movies, lately. His shows are quickly climbing to the top 10 of Sarah's favs.

I got an email yesterday from a dear friend, and it made me think of another dear friend, and then another dear friend, and then...people just kept coming to mind. So, I think this is post-worthy. Those of you who don't have anyone to forgive - read it anyway. Soak it in. At the very least, it's some good material to file away.

And my dear friend - thank you for faithfully sharing. You're more help than you know to your 'little sis'! :)

If you know anything about Tyler Perry, you know his consistent message in every play and movie surrounds this issue of forgiveness. He openly tells anyone listening/watching that forgiveness is not for others; it's for you, for your freedom, your internal healing. He's right. If you wrestle with this thing of forgiveness, please thoughtfully absorb the following. Then make that call. Get a quick personal FB message out. Get that email written. Send that card. Know what is usually the case? The other person or persons are just as desirous of restoring your friendship as you are - and just as afraid of making the first move.

I've been asked, "Well, what if that other person/persons don't want to reconcile?" Remember: forgiveness is not for the other person: it's for you. It restores your own soul and helps you be a better friend. You make the effort and leave it there. God will deal with others just as He deals with you. You be faithful to what He talks to you about.

I've also been asked, "What if the person I've never let up, never forgiven is dead?" Take a moment and ask God for HIS forgiveness in your putting YOUR forgiveness off until it was too late. If you mean it, He always forgives. Then look into your heart and find the next person whose name appears under your UNFORGIVEN list. (How did I know there were more than one? That's the nature of unforgiveness; it becomes a habit.) Then make that call. Get a quick...well, you get the idea. Unforgiveness is a self-administered poison. Get rid of it.

An excerpt from

May You Be Blessed

by Kate Novak

Just beyond our yard fence is a cleared field edged by dark woods. I can see this field from my study window, and often while seated at my desk, will catch some motion out of the corner of my eye, only to look out the window just in time to see deer moving from the woods into the sunny openness of the field. Heads held high, nostrils testing the air, ears keen to every sound and muscles tensed, these beautiful animals approach the field warily, even the lure of sweet, lush grass unable to override their sense of caution.

While watching the deer one day, it occurred to me that we humans behave much the same way when first we consider forgiving those who have hurt us. Like the deer, we approach with great caution, certain that in deciding to let go of our pain we are putting ourselves at risk. It is our hunger for peace and happiness, however, that beckons us, pulling us past our wariness, into the bright, warm light of this field of love.

As we venture forth into the forgiveness field we begin to understand that forgiving is not something we do for someone else, but a gift we give ourselves. We realized almost immediately that the field is not as fraught with danger as we had feared, not as filled with complexities as we had assumed. It is, instead, simplicity itself, as simple as stepping first from darkness into dappled shade, and from there into the light of a bright new day.

If the deer never emerged from the dark woods into the bright openness of the field, they might survive, but they would have to adapt to do so. We also adapt when we refuse to come out of the darkness of pain and fear and into the light of love. We harden and become bitter, as inwardly we adjust to the futility of our thinking. The longer we cling to our fears and our hatreds, the more heavy and out of balance we feel. It is only in letting go that we return to the center.

We each have our own reasons for not forgiving those who have hurt us. And many times the reasons seem so valid, so totally understandable that the entire world rallies around us and supports us in our unwillingness to forgive. In truth, however, unforgiveness can never be validated because it keeps us from the light. And since light is what we are made of, it is, in essence, keeping us from ourselves.

Forgiving is not as difficult as most would think. It is as much an act of the imagination as it is anything. It dares us to think of a brighter future, one where no boundaries of right and wrong exist, but only openness and the freedom to be who we truly are. Perhaps most importantly though, it allows us to go to a place in our hearts where pain and suffering are no longer allowed to have the final word.

May you always be willing to step from the darkness of fear into the field of light that is forgiveness.

I hope you got something from this. I believe there is some serious power in what this says.

Chew on it.

Thankful Thursday

To educate yourself for the feeling of gratitude

means to take nothing for granted

but to always seek out and value

the kind that will stand behind the action.

Nothing that is done for you is a matter of course.

Everything originates in a will for the good,

which is directed at you.

Train yourself never to put off

the word or action for the expression of gratitude.

Big Boys

Dominic was happy & flappy last week when he got to "drive" a firetruck. I wish everyone could have been there, including myself. I heard it was an unforgettable moment. Keep praying for this sweet, sweet boy!
Aaaaand...my other sweet, sweet boy had his cast removed yesterday - yay!!! After some coaxing from Papa, I went against my instinct on Sunday...I took Gabriel along with me when I took Maya over to swim with Dom. He reeeeally wanted to get in the water (he's three years old, and it's the end of summer - who can blame him, right?) so I wrapped his arm and told him he could sit in the pool as long as he left his arm out. Well, I know most of you are laughing and asking, "Sarah, did you really expect a three year old to stay dry while sitting in a swimming pool?!" I know, I know. Actually, he did great. But after about 2 minutes, he was irritated so he asked me to remove the plastic wrap from his arm. After he agreed that he was done 'swimming', I unwrapped his arm and threw the wrap away. As I was tossing the wrap in the trash, I looked over just in time to see Gabriel slipping down the slide, directly into the pool. Needless to say, the cast was...um...soaked. :) I won't complain, because as a result, we got to make an early trip to the dr. and have the cast removed 3 days early. :) Unfortunately, the appointment also included a well-child check-up for preschool, which resulted in 2 immunizations. Yes, I just said preschool. Can you believe it? He's a growing boy. Well, sort of. He is 37 lbs - in the 69th percentile for his weight. And, height? He has finally hit the yard stick mark. Finally. We won't mention what percentile that is. :)

In Five Years...

It's only by the grace of God and love in ALL its dimensions that we celebrated our fifth anniversary of marriage yesterday. Sam, thank you for everything. For the gifts, for my awesome dinner, and for a much needed funny movie! :)

Let's face it: Sam and I have experienced more craziness in a short timespan of five years than most couples experience in a decade. From April to December of 2006, yes - 8 months, we met, moved, changed jobs, married, and had a baby. (And yes, we're well aware we brought those circumstances in the aforementioned timespan upon ourselves.) But, that's not the end.

In addition, Sam suffered:

  • a family who hated him (mine),

  • a family who couldn't care less about him (his),

  • a split of 2 girls who desperately needed him versus a new wife & baby,

  • a wife who was unsure of him,

  • church leadership who accused him and beat him (spiritually),

  • and much more that should never be mentioned on the world wide web.

Sam was called every derogatory name imagineable. He had a mad, mama gorilla's fist in his face. He was mocked. He was scoffed at and SCREAMED at. He was blamed of crime, even. He was emotionally beaten, again and again and again and again. On Labor Day weekend of 2006, a few weeks AFTER we married (yes, bitterness takes a LONG, LONG time to dissolve but I'm working on it), Sam found himself standing by my side as I gave a public apology to my entire church congregation.

And, you know what he did? He didn't leave me. He didn't pack his bags and go back to his sweet girls who lovingly awaited him in Pennsylvania, a quiet place where he didn't have to be treated like an animal. A place where his church family cared for him and loved him for who he was.

He didn't run away and laugh at the nonsense of everything (which is exactly what I would have done in his shoes). Sam stepped up to the mic and gave an apology, too. He took the high road. And, then...just as I had been taught my entire life, everyone forgave us and loved us and supported us because that's what Christians do...

NOT.

Nope, that didn't happen. He continued to be bashed and beaten and ridiculed. It never stopped. To this day, the pokes, the punches, and the jabs still come. And they still hurt. And Sam endures it, every single time. You think he kinda loves me? You bet he does.

Have Sam & I made mistakes? You bet. Did we bring most of the stress on ourselves? That's debatable. ;) Has Sam had every reason under the sun to tuck his tail and run? Yes. Have I thought that Sam's life could be much happier without myself in it? Yes. So what has held us together for 5 years??? A covenant. We made a covenant on August 12, 2006 to stick together. When I don't feel like loving him, or he doesn't feel like loving me, when I'm sick or when he's sick, when it's payday or when we're broke, we are in this together. Leaving isn't an option.

Hey, God~I don't even know where to begin...I guess I'll start with saying I'm forever grateful for Your covenants. I'm thankful that I serve a God who believes covenants are important. I'm thankful that You believe covenants are to be honored. I'm thankful that when my marriage hits a rough spot and needs a little rebuilding that I can simply whisper Your name to rebuild my home. Please continue to help us overcome our struggles. Speak to those in our lives who can be so harsh, and supply them with patience and forgiveness. And, no matter what words are spoken or what things are done, bring us closer together with You in the middle. We love You. We are excited for the next five years of this awesome journey you have assigned to only us. We want to serve You, together and raise our sweet babies to know Your love. Guide us, every step of the way, and help us to always remember that You have our backs. ;) Talk to you in a bit...

Sarah

Sad News

Dom won't be getting to meet iCarly...at least not tomorrow or any time soon. Apparently, the tour bus was involved in an accident in Illinois, and the singer broke her ankle. :( Sure hope she has a speedy recovery.

Needless to say, the concert is cancelled. Prayers will be going Up for Miranda and others injured in the accident.

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful for the reprieve from 100+ temperatures! It makes for a much more pleasant Sarah. :)

Twenty-four years ago today, my sweet Grandpa Victory lost a nasty, ugly battle with cancer. I have very few memories of the tall, funny man, but I am thankful that he had a personal relationship with Christ so I can count on seeing him hand-in-hand with my sweet GGV some day!

I'm thankful that "love's dimensions spread farther than any of us dream...And should. 'But the greatest of these is love.'"

After a very long, trying work week, I'm thankful that my weekend is within reach - I very much need it!!

Be thankful,

Sarah

Kansas, Anyone?

Dear Diary,

Just moved to Kansas! Now this is a state that knows how to live! Beautiful, sunny days and warm, balmy evenings. It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun every day like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least it's kind of windy, though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 20th:
I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles & ...nasty. I learned my lesson, though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again.

July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's HOT, HOT!! The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here?

Aug 4th:
It's 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temp down to 85. I hate this stupid state.

Aug 8th:
If another wiseman cracks, "Hot enough for you today?", I'm going to strangle him. Stupid heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!

Aug 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my booty was on FIRE. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs...now my car smells like burnt hair, fried flesh, and baked cat.

Aug 10th:
The weather report might as well be a stinkin' recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do ANYTHING for 2 MONTHS and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week...doesn't it EVER rain in this state?!?! Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this stupid heat.

Aug 14th:
Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the stupid windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. STINKIN' KANSAS. What kind of a sick, demented idiot would want to live here??

Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.

:) Happy Friday, everyone! Have a GREAT weekend - and try to stay cool!!!
xoxo,
Sarah

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful for toasters. I had some yummy toast with supper tonight. :)

I'm also thankful that Gabriel has been a super good boy with his cast on. 1 week down, 2 weeks to go! Way to go, Gus!!!

What are you thankful for, today?

But It Also Has Miranda!

When I drove myself to work a couple of months ago, I heard tickets being given away for the iCarly concert that is coming to Wichita on August 12. As soon as I got to work, I emailed the radio station and asked for details about the contest in hopes that I could maybe participate and win tickets for Dominic. Unfortunately, the radio station responded to my email with a standard, "Good luck on winning!" reply.

I kept thinking about how much my "Honey Honey Lovey Lovey" enjoys his iCarly time. So, I couldn't let it rest. I took the next step. I emailed Miranda's manager. This is what I said:

I was delighted to hear that iCarly will be in Wichita, KS on August 12th.

I have a nephew with autism who is very near and dear to my heart. My entire family has done their best to research and educate ourselves so we can support him to the very best of our abilities; BUT...even with all of our research and education, NOBODY can extinguish a meltdown like iCarly...just the mention of her name, and all is well with the world. :) (Okay, so it's not QUITE that simple, but she plays a big part in getting him refocused...she just doesn't know it!)

I have no qualms about purchasing tickets to take him to the concert; however, considering the whimsical nature of autism, I'm afraid we would have to turn around and walk out due to the overstimulation of sound and people. Will there be any type of meet & greet that I could get him to without going to the actual concert? Please get back with me at your earliest convenience.

Thank you,

Sarah

To my surprise, I received an almost immediate reply, thanking me for taking the time to email. He stated that Miranda would be busy while she was here, visiting children in hospitals and shelters, but she would be delighted to meet Dom! He told me to touch base with him when the concert was closer.

Well, I totally let it slip my mind. I failed to send a follow-up email, and honestly, I had completely forgotten about the concert...UNTIIIIL...I got an email this morning FROM THEM following up with me! How cool is that?! This is what it read:

"Hi, Sarah,

I hope this finds you and your nephew well. Unfortunately, the meet & greet takes place inside the venue and would require tickets in order to attend. I see there are still some available if you'd like to purchase them. It would be my pleasure to offer you a pair of passes for the Meet & Greet if you do decide to go. Just let me know once you've made your decision, and I'll set it up. The M&G takes place before the show so theoretically, you could meet Miranda and then play it by ear in terms of how long you stay during the show. When the kids all start screaming and the show kicks off it definitely gets loud and stimulating. But it also has Miranda!"

Needless to say - the tickets are being ordered, and I'm taking my little lovey to see iCarly!!! Please be in prayer for Dominic, that this would be an incredible, pleasantly memorable life adventure!!! :)

Sarah
